KUALA LUMPUR, March 16:
The country’s leading pop stars, Siti Nurhaliza and Mawi, have garnered only one nomination each for the upcoming 13th Anugerah Industri Muzik.
Siti earned a nod for the Best Vocal Performance In An Album (Female) for her Siti Nurhaliza in Concert at Royal Albert Hall, London, while Mawi’s only nomination came from M. Nasir and Loloq’s composition Aduh Saliha in the Song of the Year category.
In contrast, the results, dominated mainly by newcomers, were a cause for celebration for many, including Adibah Noor, who secured six nominations.
Adibah, who managed to get her career off the ground after 12 years in the industry, earned nominations for Best New Artiste; Best Vocal Performance In An Album (Female) for the album Terlalu Istimewa, which also earned a spot in the finals of Best Pop Album; Song Of The Year; and Best Music Video for the title track Best Musical Arrangement In A Song for Ikan Di Laut, Asam Di Darat.
Her debut album, Terlalu Istimewa, is dedicated to 10-year-old rape victim Nurul Huda who died in January 2004.
“I am just so happy, and I think that it’s a great thing for people to recognise the album, and for it to be able to be accepted at this level,” said Adibah.
She, however, was stopped short of the full glory of the spotlight, when first Malaysian Idol Jaclyn Victor topped the nominations with seven ayes in her favour.
Jac joined the top five for Best New Artiste; Best Vocal Performance In An Album (Female); Best Engineered Album; and Best Pop Album for Gemilang, Best Musical Arrangement In A Song for the title track Gemilang as well as Di Bawah Pohon Asmara. Gemilang, which was also her debut single that recently garnered TV3’s Juara Lagu title, is also up for Song Of The Year.
Following closely behind Jac and Adibah are Anita Sarawak and Too Phat with four nominations each to their name while Hazami and Lo had three each.
