Call For Artistes To Make Independence Day Celebration Joyous
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 8 (Bernama) -- Information Minister Datuk Zainuddin Maidin today called on artistes to help make the Independence Day celebration joyous.
"Their participation will enable the people to realise that artistes do not merely entertain but support the national agenda as well," he told reporters after officiating at the handing-over of sponsorship pledges for the "Jalur Gemilang Independence Adventure 2006" (KMJG 2006), here.
Zainuddin said he appreciated the participation of singer and composer M. Nasir in this year's 49th anniversary of independence celebrations following the artiste's appointment as the ambassador for the KMJG 2006.
As the ambassador, Nasir will participate in the KMJG 2006 programme organised by the Information Ministry aimed at getting the people, private organisations and non-governmental organisations to fly the national flag.
Nasir will join more than 800 participants of a convoy of superbikers and four-wheel drive vehicle owners led by Deputy Information Minister Datuk Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on a tour of several areas in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak from Aug 19 to 31.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will launch the 49th Merdeka Month celebrations and the Jalur Gemilang Flag-Flying Campaign 2006 in Taman Shah Bandar in Kuala Terengganu on Aug 18.
Asked why M. Nasir was selected as the KMJG ambassador this year, Zainuddin said the singer was discernible in the area of national appreciation through his songs and performance.
Next year, it would be the turn of another artiste who would be able to drive the national mission, he added.
M. Nasir said he felt honoured to be selected as the KMJG ambassador by the ministry.
"This development is reflective of the role artistes play in instilling the spirit of patriotism for the country," he said.
