“LIRIK lagu ini memang kena dengan Mawi. Memang sengaja saya buatkan lirik yang masuk dengan aura dan personalitinya.
Sekarang, barulah saya faham kenapa peminat terutama orang Melayu memuja Mawi. Dia memang acceptionally good. Dia buat penonton rasa cukup dekat di hati mereka. Bukan saja dari segi nyanyian tetapi juga penampilan diri.
“Ilham untuk mengarang lagu ini tiba jam 3.30 pagi. Memandangkan Mawi nampak macam budak baik-baik, jadi Saliha adalah nama yang sesuai untuk melambangkan kasihnya terhadap seorang wanita. Lagu ini siap pada jam 6 pagi dan tepat jam 8 pagi, ia sedia dihantar kepada pihak Astro.
“Sham Kamikaze pula membuat susunan muzik mengikut garis panduan daripada M Nasir dan saya sendiri. Untuk seorang yang bukan profesional seperti Mawi, keupayaannya membawakan lagu ini dengan baik amat saya kagumi.
“Apa yang membimbangkan saya ialah pada awalnya, bukan takut dia lupa lirik tetapi mampukah dia membawa lagu itu dengan baik kerana dari segi melodi dan lirik yang agak berat, terutama bahagian terakhir pada lagu itu. Namun Mawi nyata hebat dan berjaya dengan tugasnya pada malam final tempoh hari.”

# Pertama kalinya lagu ini diperdengarkan oleh penyanyi asalnya, Asmawi Ani atau Mawi - juara Akademi Fantasia 3 AF3), - ialah di Stadium Tertutup, Melawati Shah Alam Selangor, pada 6 Ogos lalu.

``SEBURUK mana pun saya, kalimah Allah tetap saya pegang.'' Kata-kata Jamal Abdillah itu mungkin memberi kesan di hati penonton sebaik pulang menyaksikan rakaman Konsert Fenomena Jamal bersama M. Nasir di RTM baru-baru ini.
Malah menyaksikan ragamnya pada rakaman untuk tayangan Hari Raya itu, ramai mengakui, ia menghiburkan.
Masakan tidak, sepanjang rakaman itu, banyak aksi dan kata-kata yang lahir menggeletek hati peminat.
Siapa sangka, si pemalu itu semakin pandai menggoyangkan badan mengikut rentak lagu malah ungkapannya juga begitu bersahaja kala membalas kata-kata M. Nasir.
Sememangnya rugi andai tidak menyaksikan persembahan program Hari Raya selama sejam setengah itu.
Bayangkan! Dua ikon bersatu di pentas hiburan! Justeru bukanlah sesuatu yang menghairankan kalau ia menjadi suatu fenomena.
Kedua-dua penyanyi unggul itu tidak sahaja kelihatan begitu relaks di pentas malah teruja menghiburkan peminat.
Dengan kuasa masing-masing, baik M. Nasir mahupun Jamal Abdillah nyata mendapat tepukan dan teriakan gemuruh yang sama rata daripada para peminat yang memenuhi Auditorium Perdana, Angkasapuri, Kuala Lumpur baru-baru ini.
Namun bak kata Jamal sedikit berfalsafah ketika ditemui Mega selepas selesai rakaman persembahan itu, `seni itu rasa dan rasa itu jiwa.'
Dan benarlah bagai dikata, bakat seni raja pop dan sifu itu berjaya menguasai rasa dan jiwa para peminat yang memenuhi setiap sudut auditorium.
Lagu-lagu dendangan dua penyanyi unggul itu nyata menyerap ke seluruh perasaan penonton yang rata-ratanya peminat setia mereka.
Penonton bergembira dan bertepuk tangan kala mengiringi lagu rancak yang didendangkan.
Dan pada ketika lagu-lagu berentak perlahan dilontarkan, peminat turut merasai getarannya.
Sehinggakan ada yang mengalirkan air mata saat kedua-dua penyanyi itu mendendangkan lagu-lagu ketuhanan dengan penuh penghayatan.

Duet paling menghiburkan
Sememangnya segmen duet Jamal dan M. Nasir paling menghiburkan selain segmen solo masing-masing pada persembahan konsert itu.
Nyata, mereka punya chemistry dengan paduan vokal yang mengasyikkan, dendangan lagu-lagu pilihan mengusik jiwa termasuk lagu duet popular mereka, Ghazal untuk Rabiah.
Seperti lazim sebuah program Hari Raya, beberapa lagu Hari Raya popular turut dihidangkan termasuk lagu-lagu Salam Aidilfitri dan Salam Dunia.
Sementara itu, pada segmen solonya, M. Nasir menyampaikan lagu-lagu ciptaannya yang dipopularkan oleh penyanyi lain seperti Laila Namamu Teratas, Ratnaku dan Jaket Biru selain lagu Mentera Merah Semerah Padi, Hidayah dan Satu Hari Di Hari Raya.
Jamal Abdillah pula menyampakan beberapa lagu daripada album barunya Aku Penghibur antaranya Seroja, Menaruh Harapan, Gadis Melayu serta medley Kekasih Awal dan Akhir dan Malam Minggu Yang Mesra serta lagu Berdendang Dalam Tangisan.
Menariknya, M. Nasir dalam keterujaannya, sanggup `memberi' satu lagu percuma Tanya Sama Itu Hud Hud kepada para peminat setianya yang masih terus setia menanti biarpun rakaman sudah selesai.
Kali pertama bersama satu konsert
Melihat kejayaan dan sambutan peminat terhadap persembahan duet itu, terlontar persoalan, sama ada mereka tidak mahu menjayakan satu konsert bersama.
Ditemui selepas persembahan itu, kata M. Nasir;
``Kita pun tak tahu hasilnya begini sebab ini kali pertama kami mengadakan satu show penuh bersama.
``Tapi kalau ada sponsor yang mahu menjayakan konsert seperti itu, apa salahnya.''
Bagaimanapun tegas M. Nasir, dia tidak berhajat untuk menghasilkan satu album duet bersama kerana menganggap ia tidak praktikal.
``Masa buat lagu Ghazal Untuk Rabiah pun, saya tak rancang untuk dinyanyikan secara duet.
``Tetapi apabila lagu itu siap, saya rasakan itu yang baik dan ia menjadi,'' katanya yang mengenakan dua persalinan rekaan Tom Abang Saufi pada persembahannya itu.

KUALA LUMPUR 7 Ogos - Tidak ada konspirasi untuk memenangkan Mawi. Malah tidak ada strategi tertentu dengan memberikan lagu baru, Aduh Saliha ciptaan Pengetua Akademi Fantasia 3 (AF3), M. Nasir kepada pelajar itu pada konsert akhir, malam tadi.
``Mawi berhak menang,'' kata M. Nasir yang lebih dikenali sebagai `sifu' di kalangan industri hiburan.
Bercakap kepada Utusan Malaysia hari ini, M. Nasir berkata, pemilihan lagu Aduh Saliha ciptaannya yang dinyanyikan Mawi malam tadi, hanya secara kebetulan sahaja.
``Ini bukan bermakna saya mahu memastikan Mawi muncul johan,'' katanya lagi.
Ada sesetengah pihak melihat dengan menyanyikan lagu ciptaan M. Nasir itu memberi isyarat yang Astro dan pengetua AF3 itu mahu Mawi menjadi juara.
Pengetua AF3 itu sebaliknya menyuarakan rasa gembira dengan kemampuan Mawi membawakan lagu Aduh Saliha itu dengan begitu baik dan berkesan.
Dalam pada itu, M. Nasir turut menyangkal dakwaan pihak-pihak tertentu kononnya beliau menerima RM1 juta sebagai ganjaran menjadi pengetua AF3.
``Tak ada. Tak ada. Gaji saya macam gaji guru besar sahaja,'' katanya sambil berseloroh.
Selain juara AF3, Mawi, 24, dari Felda Taib Andak, Kulai itu juga menggondol Anugerah Vokal Terbaik dan Persembahan Terbaik.
Mengulas prestasi keseluruhan pelajar, M. Nasir berkata, beliau berpuas hati dengan persembahan mereka pada konsert terakhir malam tadi tetapi `bukan betul-betul cukup terbaik' berbanding konsert mingguan AF3 sebelum ini.
``Peserta yang dipilih memang boleh menyanyi dan tidak mempunyai masalah cuma bergantung kepada persediaan mereka untuk ke peringkat akhir dan sebagai-nya,'' katanya.
Pada kemuncak konsert mingguan di Stadium Malawati, Shah Alam itu, Mawi mendendangkan lagu Seroja dendangan asal S. Effendi dan Aduh Saliha.
Mawi memperoleh 58 peratus, meninggalkan pesaing terdekatnya, Felix yang mendapat 30 peratus, Amylea lapan peratus dan Marsha hanya empat peratus.
Mengulas lanjut, M. Nasir berkata, sepanjang pengamatannya, beliau mendapati setiap pelajar mempunyai tahap kesungguhan tersendiri dan mahu belajar dalam bidang nyanyian ketika berada di akademi itu.
Beliau menganggap semua pelajar sebagai anaknya sendiri sepanjang mengetuai AF3.

ADUH SALIHA dicipta Pengetua Akademi Fantasia 3, M Nasir, selepas diminta menyediakan satu lagu untuk dinyanyikan Mawi pada konsert terakhir, Sabtu lalu.
Lalu, dia mencipta satu lagu yang dikira sesuai dengan keupayaan Mawi ketika itu. Begitupun, pada konsert akhir, dia tidak dapat melarikan dirinya daripada berasa risau, bimbang jika Mawi melakukan kesilapan atau lari tempo ketika menyanyi.
Namun, kerisauan M Nasir dibalas baik Mawi apabila sifu itu mengaku, Mawi ‘lulus’ ujian menyanyikan lagu berkenaan.
“Saya berpuas hati apabila Mawi dapat melepasi kepayahan itu. Dia sudah lulus. Tetapi, saya tidak boleh kata dia cemerlang malam ini. Bagi saya, semua pelajar sudah menunjukkan persembahan terbaik pada beberapa minggu sebelumnya. Malam ini, masih ada pelajar buat silap,” kata M Nasir selepas sidang akhbar berakhir.
M Nasir turut menyuarakan pujian pada Mawi yang menunjukkan peningkatan dan usaha sepanjang bergelar pelajar AF3.
“Lihatlah, selepas dia lupa lirik pada konsert kedua, dia tidak lagi lupa lirik pada konsert berikutnya. Mengenai soalan sama ada saya akan menerbitkan lagu untuk albumnya, jika diberi peluang, mungkin saya akan berbuat demikian,” katanya.
Pencipta, penulis lirik, pelakon, pengarah dan pelukis ini juga mengaku, dia meletakkan harapan agak tinggi pada pelajarnya apabila dia diberikan tanggung jawab sebagai pengetua.
“Namun, saya kena sedar, mereka bergelar pelajar. Jadi, setiap orang ada kelemahannya. Tetapi, saya berbangga apabila dengan hanya dalam tempoh sepuluh minggu, kita nampak AF3 melahirkan penghibur yang memiliki ‘sesuatu’.
“Sewaktu mula-mula dulu, saya khuatir sama ada program ini mampu melahirkan penghibur berkualiti kerana kesuntukan waktu. Saya rasa, saya sudah menukar sesetengah pendapat orang ramai yang AF3 juga mampu melahirkan penghibur yang agak baik, dalam tempoh singkat. Begitupun, dia orang masih perlu belajar lagi, bukan setakat ini saja.
“Saya menerima tawaran sebagai pengetua dulu pun kerana saya menganggap ini cabaran besar buat saya. Ia satu cabaran yang baik dan saya dapat lihat, pelajar terbabit boleh melakukannya,” ujar M Nasir yang mengaku pengalaman bersama AF3 amat manis buat dirinya.

“Lihatlah, selepas dia lupa lirik pada konsert kedua, dia tidak lagi lupa lirik pada konsert berikutnya. Mengenai soalan sama ada saya akan menerbitkan lagu untuk albumnya, jika diberi peluang, mungkin saya akan berbuat demikian,” katanya.
Pencipta, penulis lirik, pelakon, pengarah dan pelukis ini juga mengaku, dia meletakkan harapan agak tinggi pada pelajarnya apabila dia diberikan tanggung jawab sebagai pengetua.
“Namun, saya kena sedar, mereka bergelar pelajar. Jadi, setiap orang ada kelemahannya. Tetapi, saya berbangga apabila dengan hanya dalam tempoh sepuluh minggu, kita nampak AF3 melahirkan penghibur yang memiliki ‘sesuatu’.
“Sewaktu mula-mula dulu, saya khuatir sama ada program ini mampu melahirkan penghibur berkualiti kerana kesuntukan waktu. Saya rasa, saya sudah menukar sesetengah pendapat orang ramai yang AF3 juga mampu melahirkan penghibur yang agak baik, dalam tempoh singkat. Begitupun, dia orang masih perlu belajar lagi, bukan setakat ini saja.

One thing for sure. Akademi Fantasia fans are a passionate lot. The recent decision by show producers Astro not to reveal the percentage of votes of the final four students only added fuel to the fire for conspiracy theories.
Just a simple surf of Akademi Fantasia-related sites and forums revealed a certain perception that the results and direction of the popular reality show has been manipulated since the beginning.
One of the interesting comments that might sum up the whole show came from Cari.com.my forum member SyD:
“You think this is all coincidence? I think not. Malaysian TV stations still are not brave enough to let their reality programmes have a life of its own. They are still dependent on script and deliberate video editing.”
Most comments on the Internet forums, however, were about ringgit and sen. They believe that Astro is trying to squeeze as much money as possible from viewers and staunch followers of Akademi Fantasia.
Every time a ‘controversy’ develops, comments will pour into Astro@15 channel via SMS — which is certainly a profit-generating venture.

M. Nasir challenged

The ‘sifu’ of Akademia Fantasia 3 feels anything but that. In fact, M. Nasir tells SURAYA AL-ATTAS, it’s hard for him not to be emotionally involved with the students, and how he’s the one on the edge.
HE’S famous for not mincing his words. That’s when he does choose to speak. Usually a man of few words, M. Nasir’s forthrightness has often been misconstrued for arrogance.
But then, that’s the very essence of this multi-talented artiste — he’s a songwriter, singer, album producer, painter, film director and actor. M. Nasir just wouldn’t be M. Nasir if he doesn’t didn’t occasionally speak out against something or other.
That was why when he was appointed principal of Astro Ria’s Akademi Fantasia 3 (AF3), one of the most-watched reality-based talent search television programmes, fans couldn’t wait to see how Nasir would handle the “students”. He roared with laughter when it was suggested that viewers expected to see a sterner “headmaster” in him but instead saw a father, big brother, teacher, counsellor all rolled into one.
Q: You seem to have slipped into the role of AF3 principal with ease. Was it a conscious move to show a different side of M. Nasir?
A: Well, yes and no. The first three weeks I was more of an observer on the show. I just wanted to suss out the situation. But let me tell you, it’s not difficult to fall in love with the students.
Q: What is the most challenging part of the job?
A: The fact that we, the teachers, have to be tough. It’s not easy to have to control your emotions... that I didn’t anticipate.
Q: I understand you didn’t think much of the show before this. What made you agree to be part of the academy?
A: Initially I didn’t want to do it. Although I had watched seasons 1 and 2, I never followed the show. I guess I was looking more for quality than anything. But then, I realised it’s not all about quality. It’s about people.
It’s not that I didn’t like the show before but I just refused to be sucked in. You can’t deny that once you watch the show, you’re hooked.
Q: So what do you think of AF now that you’re part of the team?
A: I went in there with a mission. I wanted to bring the students to a certain level and I was really raring to go. But then I realised that I can’t be too ambitious. They come from different backgrounds, with different ways of thinking.
Lately, I’ve been telling myself ‘Yeah, right, so you want to show people that you can do it? Hah... let’s see how you do it then.’ Well, what do you know? Instead of them (the students), I’m the one who’s being challenged!
Q: If there was anything you could change about the programme, would you? The voting system, perhaps? (The fate of the participants lies solely in the hands of viewers who would decide via SMS who’s in and who’s out after the weekly concert)
A: No. I think the person who created it is a genius (AF is a franchise of Mexican television show La Academia). That’s the beauty of the show. It creates conflicting ideas. That’s what makes the show unique.
Q: Do your children watch the programme?
A: They’ve watched AF1 and AF2 but they never really followed the shows.
Q: And now that you and your wife (Marlia Musa, who’s the drama teacher on the show) are on it?
A: Well, the younger ones have been staying up to watch it. But I’ve been having this umm... “conflict” with my 20-year-old son. I used to say the programme doesn’t do any good to the music industry. When I accepted the job, he asked ‘Why?’ What can I say? I only managed to tell him ‘You’re too young to understand...’ (laughs)
Q: Do you discuss the show at home?
A: Oh yeah, in fact we over-discuss it. Even my mother-in-law is in on it!
Q: How would you rate Marlia’s teaching skills?
A: I think she has done a wonderful job in bringing out the students’ confidence. I was quite amazed because to me acting is not easy. But most of the students can do it. It’s just that they don’t realise what they’re doing — the games and exercises in class — is acting.
Q: I know Marlia felt very strongly about Adlin Aman Ramlie’s comments. How did you feel about them? (Adlin has appeared as one of the critics three times on AF; his second appearance caused quite an uproar when he used crude words to comment on the contestants)
A: The nature of the show is such that we have to expect the unexpected. That’s the `beauty’ of the show. Malaysians, too, can be quite sadistic. Some people actually love watching others being run down in public. There are different kinds of critics. Some don’t actually
say what’s on their minds; some are not knowledgeable enough; and there are some who get so technical that their comments are lost on the students. Maybe that’s the kind of variety that Astro is looking for.
Q: This doesn’t have anything to do with AF. How do you feel about being called sifu (teacher, his nickname in the music industry)
A: It makes me want to cringe... every time! I don’t like labels of any sort. But it’s a Malaysian thing. They somehow need to put a tag on people — here, we have “Papa Rock” and “Ratu Jazz”, etc. Whether I like it or not is immaterial. People are still going to call me that.

In-Concert: Two of the best

Jamal and Nasir’s recent concert filmed for Hari Raya was sheer magic, pens AZMAN AHMAD.
ELECTRICITY filled the air and Angkasapuri’s Auditorium Perdana glowed with stardust the minute music maestro M. Nasir appeared on stage.
Amidst rapturous applause from the packed studio audience, the multi-talented sifu kicked off Konsert Fenomena Jamal Abdillah and M. Nasir with his self-composed upbeat number, Mentera Semerah Padi.
His flawless voice was well complemented with some serious silat movements in the song that celebrated the bravery of Malay warriors.
The recording of this show last Tuesday night to be aired by RTM sometime during the coming Hari Raya holidays, turned even more riotous the minute Jamal Abdillah took centrestage after Nasir’s number.
Looking fresh and charming as ever, the always slim charmer offered Seroja, a classic, delighting listeners with his trademark soulful voice and melancholic facial expressions. As expected, the audience turnout for this show featuring two of Malaysia’s best singing ‘otais’ was simply overwhelming, with some locked outside as all seats were taken.
Fortunately, the latecomers and die-hard fans – numbering almost a bus-load – were patient enough to wait and were allowed in by the security guards to watch the recording via a giant monitor placed outside the auditorium.
Nasir appeared again, this time in designer Tom Abang Saufi’s hooded, loose, straight-cut, knee-length outfit which looked more like a nightgown.
He proceeded with another of his compositions, Laila Namamu Teratas, recorded by Amy Search, and displayed his mastery of rock.
A lot more talkative now compared to his early years, Nasir joked that he was afraid to open his mouth as wide as Amy’s for fear of swallowing the flying bubbles cascading down from the ceiling blower – prompting laughter from the crowd.
His next song Ratnaku, recorded by singer Roy, saw Nasir swaying seductively to this uplifting number before launching into a head-banging routine – albeit a mild one – while rocking the house with Jaket Biru.
Renowned for his spiritual leanings evident in his compositions, Nasir’s mystical aura was evident when he sailed effortlessly through Hidayah which saw many in the audience pondering its religious references. Since it was a show meant for the Hari Raya break, Nasir obligingly reprised his famous festive tune, Suatu Hari Di Hari Raya where the entire hall sportingly sang along before he invited Jamal out again.
Immaculately dressed in a grey coat matched with a baggy tailored pants, Jamal mesmerised the cheering crowd with Zaiton Sameon’s Menaruh Harapan.
With Joe Wings on guitar, Jamal almost brought the house down with his own version of Gadis Melayu once recorded by singer Othman Hamzah.
He managed to tickle the audience with his awkward dancing style but at the same time had the women in the audience smiling.
In honour of Nasir, Jamal did Berdendang Dalam Tangisan, followed by his signature mega-hit Kekasih Awal Dan Akhir which flowed into the late Broery Marantika’s Malam Minggu yang Mesra.
Sparks started to fly in all directions when the two top crooners collaborated on Kepadamu Kekasih.
The excitement intensified further when the duo sang Ghazal Untuk Rabiah which they recorded for one of Jamal’s top selling albums.
Jamal wriggled his twig-like body in a frenzy while Nasir did his Nusantara moves which stirred the crowd mightily.
The magnificent duo wrapped up the entertaining show with Salam Aidilfitri and Salam Dunia, again creating laughter when Jamal showed off his zapin steps.
Since the crowd refused to disperse after the show ended, they were presented with an ‘encore’ in the form of a repeat of Kepadamu Kekasih.
The audience had no doubt that they had seen two of the best local singers who sang from the heart, and were more interested in complementing each other instead of trying to outdo one another.

‘Sepet’ bags six awards

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 18:
A small-budget love story, Sepet snapped up six awards in the 18th Malaysian Film Festival Kuala Lumpur 2005 (FFM18), including the coveted Best Picture Award, and upstaged Malaysia’s most expensive film, Puteri Gunung Ledang.
Sepet, an inter-racial love story between a Chinese boy and Malay girl produced by MHZ Films, also won for Best Original Story, Best Supporting Actress, Best Poster, Most Promising Actor and Most Promising Actress at the awards ceremony at the Putra World Trade Centre last night.
Director Yasmin Ahmad said she made the film for her parents to enjoy and its success was a dream come true, especially after she faced many difficulties getting the film released.
Puteri Gunung Ledang, however, created history in the festival when its director, Saw Teong Hin, won the Best Director award and became the first non-Malay to win in that category.
Saw beat Yasmin (Sepet), Silver Chong (Di Ambang Misteri), Badaruddin Azmi (Gangster) and Professor Madya Abdul Razak Mohaideen (Lady Boss).
The RM20 million epic, a love story between a Javanese princess and Malaccan warrior Hang Tuah, also bagged the awards for Best Screenplay, Best Music Score and Best Art Direction.
The film also received a Special Jury award for the first Malaysian epic.
Saw in his acceptance speech thanked the producers, Enfiniti Pictures for giving him the most incredible journey of his life.
"When we started the movie, we agreed to do our best and see where it would lead us. The film took us around the world, yet tonight is the best night of our lives."
In a surprise win, Zamarul Hisham beat Rosyam Nor in the Best Actor category.
Zamarul won for his role in Di Ambang Misteri, a psychological thriller that failed to make any impact at the box office.
Rosyam was nominated for playing three roles in this year’s box office hit, Gangster. The other three nominees were M. Nasir (Puteri Gunung Ledang), Yusry KRU (Hingga Hujung Nyawa) and Saiful Apek (Lady Boss).
Malaysia’s most bankable actress, Erra Fazira won Best Actress for her role in heavy drama, Hingga Hujung Nyawa, beating Tiara Jacquelina (Puteri Gunung Ledang), Nasha Aziz (Tak Ori Tapi Ok) and Nur Fazura (Qaisy & Laila).
In the Best Supporting Actor category, Radhi Khalid who took on the role of an Afghan warrior in Qaisy & Laila, beat four others, including Datuk Rahim Razali (Puteri Gunung Ledang), Abu Bakar Omar (Hingga Hujung Nyawa) and Harith Iskandar (Sepet).
While Ida Nerina grabbed the Best Supporting Actress for Sepet, the film’s two leads — Sharifah Amani and Ng Choo Seong — were awarded the Best Promising Actress and Best Promising Actor, respectively.
The awards night, shown live on Astro Ria, was officiated by Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim.
Other winners included Azman Abu Hassan in the Best Sound category for Gangster, Shawn Lee Jenxian in the Best Child actor for Ah Lok Kafe the Movie, S. Rakesh in the Best Editing category for Gangster and Indra Che Muda in the Best Cinematography category for Pontianak Menjerit.
Three other main awards - Best Animation, Best Short Film and Best Documentary were also presented.
The Best Documentary went to Mohamed Harun for Temenggor — Biodiversity in the Face of Danger, while the Best Short Film went to Faizul A. Rashid for Dewa Panah and Best Animation went to Hoo Whai Khinn for Olsh.
Two Anugerah Karyawan, an award to honour people in the film industry, were given to visionary filmmaker Osman Ali and veteran cameraman A. Bakar Ali.
The event was hosted by Bob Lokman and Linda Onn with Nasha Aziz, Datuk Mustapha Maarof, Hans Issac, Shanie, Rosyam Nor and Maya Karin as co-presenters.
The audience were also treated to performances by Jamal Abdillah and Liza Hanim who performed Bagaikan Sakti, the theme song for Puteri Gunung Ledang as well as Saiful Apek, Wahid Satay, AC Mizal and Zehra Zambri.
A total of 25 films took part in Malaysia's version of the Oscars.
The other films included Qaisy & Laila, Pontianak Menjerit, GK3 The Movie and Ah Loke Kafe the Movie, among others.
The awards lasted two hours. It began with the national anthem, Negaraku, at 8.30pm. It was the shortest awards night in the history of the festival.

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 18:
A small-budget love story, Sepet snapped up six awards in the 18th Malaysian Film Festival Kuala Lumpur 2005 (FFM18), including the coveted Best Picture Award, and upstaged Malaysia’s most expensive film, Puteri Gunung Ledang.
Sepet, an inter-racial love story between a Chinese boy and Malay girl produced by MHZ Films, also won for Best Original Story, Best Supporting Actress, Best Poster, Most Promising Actor and Most Promising Actress at the awards ceremony at the Putra World Trade Centre last night.
Director Yasmin Ahmad said she made the film for her parents to enjoy and its success was a dream come true, especially after she faced many difficulties getting the film released.
Puteri Gunung Ledang, however, created history in the festival when its director, Saw Teong Hin, won the Best Director award and became the first non-Malay to win in that category.
Saw beat Yasmin (Sepet), Silver Chong (Di Ambang Misteri), Badaruddin Azmi (Gangster) and Professor Madya Abdul Razak Mohaideen (Lady Boss).
The RM20 million epic, a love story between a Javanese princess and Malaccan warrior Hang Tuah, also bagged the awards for Best Screenplay, Best Music Score and Best Art Direction.
The film also received a Special Jury award for the first Malaysian epic.
Saw in his acceptance speech thanked the producers, Enfiniti Pictures for giving him the most incredible journey of his life.
"When we started the movie, we agreed to do our best and see where it would lead us. The film took us around the world, yet tonight is the best night of our lives."
In a surprise win, Zamarul Hisham beat Rosyam Nor in the Best Actor category.
Zamarul won for his role in Di Ambang Misteri, a psychological thriller that failed to make any impact at the box office.
Rosyam was nominated for playing three roles in this year’s box office hit, Gangster. The other three nominees were M. Nasir (Puteri Gunung Ledang), Yusry KRU (Hingga Hujung Nyawa) and Saiful Apek (Lady Boss).

AKADEMI Fantasia 3’s frontrunner Asmawi Ani, better known as Mawi, has become quite a sensation.
The attention the 24-year-old Johorean has been getting in newspapers, magazines and the Internet can challenge that of many celebrities.
But just like any adored star in the making, not all that’s being said or written about Mawi is good.
There are some jealous souls quick to quibble about any flaw or shortcoming they may find about him.
The latest rumour spreading about Mawi is that he and AF principal M. Nasir are related – thus claims of the music maestro favouring him in the competition.
So What? invited Nasir to sit on The Hot Seat to shed some light on that.

MANY were surprised when music ‘sifu’ M. Nasir accepted the offer to head the faculty of ‘Akademi Fantasia 3’.
They assumed that a respected artiste of his prestige would be averse to being a part of something so commercial.
And by becoming AF3 principal, Nasir has had to endure more criticism than before when he was just a singer, songwriter and actor.
Some have queried why his songs are often picked as assignments for the contestants.
Then, there are those who claim that he favours some of the contestants more than others.
Those brickbats came fast and heavy after the wildcard entries of Mawi and Marsha.
Lately, So What? was told that Nasir is very much related to Mawi – a hint that he’s favouring the crowd favourite.
Nasir’s reaction to the rumour was simply laughter, followed by a moment of silence. But just when we expected a denial next, Nasir said: “I don’t know....”
When we asked him directly whether Mawi was really related to him, he just answered: “Is that for sure?... I don’t know.”
When it’s mentioned that Mawi is from Kulai, Johor, the Singapore-born Nasir replied: “When it comes to Johor, I don’t know... not that I know of, anyway.”
With that puzzling reply, Nasir ended the topic of whether he was a relative of Mawi.
The discussion shifted to the reality of how popularity is proving to be more important than talent, as reflected in the SMS votes.
Nasir simply said: “That’s the honesty of the people .”
He added that though ideally, the judging should be based on talent, ‘this is a reality TV show’.
On the show’s fanatical fans, Nasir said: “In a way, it’s disturbing to some people. But then again, the show thrives on eliciting reactions. So, as long as these fans don’t go overboard, I don’t see anything wrong.’’
Despite his high standards, Nasir sees some solid talents in the show.
“For these talented performers, no matter how they fare in the show, they’re set for a career in the music industry.’
