With his unmistakable aura and dedication to originality, M Nasir discusses his roots, his rise to fame, and his mission to inspire the next generation of artists

In person, there’s a near-mythical aura about M Nasir (Dato' Mohamad Nasir Mohamed). This is not entirely surprising with his legendary status for fusing ethnic sounds with rock, thereby creating a genre all his own.

A self-taught artist, he’s one of very few who has become a leading voice in integrating traditional Malay sounds with rock, pop, and blues, earning him recognition as a pioneer of “ethno rock”—a category that elegantly reflects the complexity of Malaysia’s own multicultural identity.

His influence began in the 1980s with the formation of Kembara, a folk-rock band, before launching a successful solo career that explored deeper themes of spirituality, identity, and heritage. Loved for his poetic lyricism, he also composed iconic songs for renowned Malaysian artists and contributed to various theatre productions as a set designer, painter, and actor.

Over the years, M Nasir’s artistry and dedication to his craft have earned him an iconic status, solidifying his place as an enduring cultural legend in Malaysia. His advice to young artists is simple but powerful: “Work hard, make mistakes, learn, and do.”

M Nasir’s journey from suburban Singapore to becoming one of Malaysia’s most respected musicians is a story of resilience, pure talent, and a visionary approach. He is more relevant today than ever as his work reflects Malaysia’s current music landscape—one that’s adapting to global influences while holding on to its roots.

What types of music have influenced you most?

A mix of ethnic music, rock, and blues. In particular, I remember buying a Pink Floyd album—The Wall—after I finished school. Before that, I mainly listened to my brother’s records, which were mostly classic albums.

Is there anything you wish you had known when you first started as a musician?

It’s hard to say. Maybe just that everything is a learning experience.

What’s one of the best investments you’ve made, whether it’s time, money, or effort?

Probably moving out and living independently after school. I didn’t stay with my parents; I lived in the city. I was a Singaporean at the time, so it felt like a university education in itself.

Over the last five years, is there a belief, behaviour, or habit you've developed that’s improved your life?

Learning patience and restraint. I’m still working on it, but I’ve definitely become more patient.

What advice would you give to a talented, driven artist about to enter the entertainment industry?

Work hard and be industrious. Do what you love and keep doing it, again and again. Mistakes and failures are part of the journey, and you learn from them.

Is there any advice you think they should ignore?

I’m not big on advice, honestly. Some advice I received wasn’t the best, so I believe each person learns in their own way.

If you had the power to grow and develop the Malaysian music industry, what would you focus on?

Creativity and originality. It’s important to create something uniquely your own and build character.

If not a musician, what do you think you would have been?

I was interested in football when I was younger, but after attending art school, I shifted toward painting. I still paint and hold exhibitions occasionally. At one point, I was offered a chance to build sets for a Bangsawan play, which got me involved with dramatists and stage performers. That experience inspired me to explore stage performance.

What’s one unique thing you love about Malaysia?

The dynamism and diversity here.

What was the last great Malaysian meal you had?

Probably nasi kandar. But I’d also say my wife’s cooking—she prepares almost all the traditional main dishes and they’re fantastic. Lately, we’ve been frequenting Hameediyah as well.
