It is time for TV3’s Anugerah Juara Lagu Ke-21 (AJL 21), one of the most prestigious events in the Malaysian music scene. Who will emerge winner of the coveted best song of the year award? Will it be a battle between veteran composers M. Nasir and Pak Ngah? Or will Nik Nizam surprise us by clinching the award?

The much talked about event will take centre stage on Jan 21 at Stadium Putra Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur. If you’re a big fan, tune in to the three-hour event to be aired live on TV3 and Hot FM at 8.30pm.

For the third consecutive year, bubbly Cheryl Samad will host the show alongside Ally Iskandar and Fara Fauzana. Preceding the presentation will be the red carpet event, which will be hosted by Awal Ashaari and Maya Karin.

AJL is the pinnacle of the station’s popular chart programme Muzik-Muzik. It pays tribute to the work of local composers and songwriters.

Twelve songs by 10 composers and 13 lyricists will be contending in three categories – Pop Rock, Ballad and Creative Ethnic.

Like past years, the competition offers cash prizes and trophies for each category contested. The winner in each category walks away with RM12,000 and a trophy. The cash prize for the overall Juara Lagu winner is RM25,000. Winners of the best performer and best vocal awards will get RM10,000 cash and a trophy each.

The nominees are:

Pop Rock: Lagu Jiwa Lagu Cinta (sung by Mawi and M. Nasir/ music composed by M. Nasir/ lyrics by Loloq); Diari Seorang Lelaki (Pretty Ugly/ Neves/ Neves); Juwita Cinta Terindah (M. Nasir/ M. Nasir/ M. Nasir); Tak Tercapai Akalmu (Elyana/ Aidit Alfian/ Ad Samad).

Strong contender: Find out if M. Nasir clinches the coveted best song of the year award.

Ballad: Mungkir Bahagia (Hazami/ Hazami/ Hazami and Ita); Terlalu Istimewa (Adibah Noor/ Azlan Abu Hasan/ Adibah Noor); Ku Seru (Misha Omar/ Ajai/ Habsah Hassan and Shuhaimi Baba); Secebit Harapan (Nora/ Zulkifli Mamat/ Noor).

Creative Ethnic: Hantaran Hati (Bob and Aspalela/ Nik Nizam/ Rosminah Tahir); Candak (Siti Nordiana/ Pak Ngah/ Lokman Ghani); Warkah Buat Laila (Zahid/ Ayob Ibrahim/ Habsah Hassan); Zapin Cinta SMS (Senario and Adibah Noor/ Anuar Dahan/ Anuar Dahlan).

AJL 21’s theme is Rentak Kita, Rentak Dunia (Global Beat) and will showcase a fusion of music from various genres.

“AJL is the only talent awards show that recognises local composers and songwriters. We hope local composers will be inspired to groove to the sounds of world music while retaining their identities.

“We will further encourage them to showcase their creativity by producing fusion music that combines various melodies, rhythm and music arrangements.

“In line with this, TV3 is encouraging composers to make their music universal by blending hip hop with dangdut, pop, rock and ethnic beat.

“We hope to create music that can blend with international music,” said Media Prima Television networks chief executive officer Datuk Farid Ridzuan during a private interview recently.

Last year’s AJL garnered ratings of up to 4.7 million viewers. The station aims to attract more viewers for the upcoming finals. To this, Farid said it was a challenge to move from one benchmark to another.

“It can be a pressure to change format annually. It is important to have early preparations and create the hype through promotions.”

Farid will be announcing Muzik Muzik’s new format next month. He hopes the new set-up will unearth more talents and make the show more versatile and competitive.

“We need to do something as our music industry is stagnant. Every year, the same group of composers seems to be vying for the various categories.

“We have been discussing to change the show’s format. It is important to make the necessary changes because songwriters and composers are important. Without them, our music industry suffers.

“We hope to raise awareness by holding contests and workshops to encourage youngsters to venture into this field.”

Tickets to AJL 21 will be given out through contests and activities held by MyTV3, Malaysia Hari Ini and Hot FM.
