M. Nasir and Ramli Sarip unplugged

A CASUAL dinner for the Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang 2006 convoy participants turned into a mini concert with singer M. Nasir and rocker Ramli Sarip ruling the stage.

The buffet dinner on Monday at the Sungai Nibong pesta site in Penang started tamely enough with Rocky Din and Rozi belting out oldies to the accompaniment of a three-piece band made up of Hashim Ariffin on the violin, Azmi Ahmad on guitar and Nordin Ahmad on the keyboard.

While the music played, guests and convoy members comprising superbikers and four-wheel drive enthusiasts, were busy tucking in roti jala with chicken curry, satay and nasi himpit, pasembur, nasi briyani, beehoon and ais kacang.

By the time Ramli was invited to perform, the stage was sufficiently warmed up, tummies were half-full and many were in high spirits, ready to rock and roll.

The moment Ramli sang the first few notes of Bee Gees’ To Love Somebody in his husky voice, the audience dropped their forks and spoons momentarily to wave and cheer.

ALL WORKED UP:Members of the audience going ga-ga over the rare appereance together of the two local pop and rock icons.

Next, he sang Doa Buat Kekasih in a duet with Rozi that got the audience clamouring for an encore. Ramli obliged with a solo rock-and-roll number before giving up the microphone.

When Rocky Din returned to the stage singing Lagu Jiwa Lagu Cinta, originally popularised by Nasir and Mawi, the audience called and gestured for Nasir who hung on to his chair, pretending not to hear until he was led to the stage.

Nasir and Rocky Din then performed a duet of the same song. However, the audience, emboldened by the fulfilment of their earlier demands, began chanting for Mawi although the hottest Akademi Fantasia idol was not present.

Nasir kept disappointment at bay with a cool rendition of Hati Emas.

When Ramli joined Nasir on stage, the duo sang a wacky number by coining new lyrics to a blues tune accentuated by impassioned cries of Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka!

Rocky Din closed the show with Sudirman’s patriotic song Tanggal 31.

Present at the dinner, organised by the state Information Depart-ment, was state executive councillor Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan representing the Chief Minister.

The convoy of 149 superbikers and 49 four wheel-drives, headed by Deputy Information Minister Datuk Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, started from Kuala Terengganu on Aug 18 and will end in Kuching on Aug 31.

Nasir is the appointed ambassador of Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang 2006 which is jointly organised by the Information De-partment and Superbikers Association of Malaysia.
